Creating A Frame

As always Scott Kelby’s blog is a gem for new creative ideas. This frame tutorial comes directly from his site here, so go watch the video or just read on on the summary. Why reinvent the wheel? Because I will forget no doubt, half of what he said by tomorrow, so at least this way I can have a quick peep to remind myself how it was done. The problem with a lot of frames, is that they look flat and dull almost as if they came out of Photoshop. This technique makes the frame look a little more life-like as we will be adding some gradients around the edge of the frame to give a lighting...

Simulating Lith in Photoshop

After having read John Beardsworth’s fantastic book on advanced black and white post processing methods, I thought I would give the Lith technique a try. The idea principally is to add high contrast to an image, where through a few modifications, the dark tonal range will be dark and grainy and the highlight areas will have a peachy-brown tone to them. I used an image that I recently shot in Paris. No real reason in the choice other than that I took the shot with a black and white result in mind. I’m pretty sure this method would look a lot better on an ‘arty’ type image. Anyway...

Medieval St Maur

Back in May..I know, it’s July..but..St Maur de Fossées held a medieval weekend in the grounds of the ruined abbey. To say that it was crowded would be an understatement. At times I couldn’t even point my camera at a subject without having someone push past me from behind ..or what I love the most.stand right in front of you. Sometimes I felt like exchanging my camera for a double handed claymore! It was however, quite interesting. Various stands showing how life was in this era. A doctor showed the tools used in those days to heal the sick and wounded from battle. A smith worked hard on...

Dinosaurs

When Tom learnt that the dinosaurs ‘were in town’ he kept bringing up the subject everyday. “Daddy when are we going to see the dinosaurs?” “Is it true dinosaurs eat little boys for tea?” and so on… A large exhibition was being held at the Porte De Versailles in Paris, and from what we had heard, was that it was great fun for the kids and adults alike. When I entered the hall, the first person I saw was a large security man heading towards me eyeing my camera and the off flash cable that lead to a deep pocket holding my speedlight. “Regarding the camera...

Learning To Rollerskate

Now most people would buy a pair of rollerskates when they are 7 or 8. Caroline however, got herself a pair for her 40th birthday. Evil present from me hehe !! Well she did ask for a pair. I just made sure her life insurance was pumped up a few billion euros before she set off !  Anyways, off we pop one sunny Sunday afternoon, Caroline and her nice new clean rollerskates, Tom on his scooter and me with my D700 with the autofocus set on the 3D setting and ready to shoot 9 frames a second..there was noo way I was gonna miss a ‘fun’ shot. However despite a very wobbly start, she disappointed...

Up The Eiffel Tower

The first time I went up the Eiffel Tower was about 15 years ago, when myself a a mate from the same regiment decided to honour Paris with our presence for a weekend - withonly the best behaviour of course!!  Before racing off to Orly airport to catch a flight back to Blighty, we tossed a coin and said “beer or the Eiffel Tower!” I told you we were behaving ourselves At the top of the the tower we started to discuss the best way to jump off it with a parachute without banging into the structure below. The tower is only 324m high and under normal circumstances, jumping out of a Hercules...
